Hanging Curtains Like an Interior Designer | How To

Where do I place the rod? How long should they be? Curtain Panels or Shades? Darkening or Sheer?

I am asked these questions from clients on a consistent bases. For Interior designers we are trained and sometimes its or “eye” that gives us the ability to give the curtain a elegant look. As an e-designer I am given the challenge to communicate these ways to my clients via guides. So today, i wanted to go over some of my top tips that I provided my clients and provided you guys the guide I use for my clients, FOR FREE!

Does it Matter How I Hang My Curtains?

Yes, mainly because you will make your space look bigger..did you know that? Hang your curtains precisely and you can create these effects in your home :

  1. make your ceilings appear higher

  2. make your windows look bigger

  3. allow more light into your room

  4. add more impact to your room

  5. make your space look more polished

We’re going to go through everything today to help you hang your curtains like an interior designer!

Get those Measurements!

The first step and the most important step in creating that designer look is making sure your measurements are correct. Make sure you have a measuring tape for this step! You might be asking why do we need to measure before we buy curtains? Here is why:

  1. We need to know how wide of rod we need.

  2. We need to know the width curtain panel.

  3. We need to know how long the curtains will be.

Pick the Length of Your Curtains

We are going to go over the different style lengths that designers use the most and why.

We’ve used our measurement guide to take our measurements, now it’s time to figure out what length curtains we want to hang in our space.

Here are the most popular ways to hang curtains.

Puddle.

This is probably my favorite of the style of hanging your curtains, simple elegance. For this style you want to let your curtains drop 2-4″ from the floor. (Use our curtain guide to figure that out)

Just Kiss the Floor.

This look is the most difficult to achieve. Once this look is achieved a clean, tailored look is what you will get. I love this look for my transitional/contemporary clients that often like the clean lines but sometimes lean towards the more traditional route as well. PERFECT for you if you are that consumer. What you want to accomplish is a curtain that is just “kissing” the floor.

Designer’s Tip: To accomplish this look make sure you measure the distance from the rod to the bottom of the floor. Use a pen that will help you out a ton!

Floating.

Floating curtains are not my top choice for curtain styles. However, floating curtains do have their purpose! I highly recommend them for pet owners! Why? Well, you can image your furry friend on a puddle curtain.. might be a cute holiday picture but not cute to clean up. So if you have pets hang those curtains but place them about 1/2″ off the ground!

My suggestions.

When choosing the length and style of your curtains consider where you are placing them. Bedroom, Living room, or Dining Room? Dining Room – More formal area so maybe choose a puddle style. Bedroom – This a casual space, Maybe you would like to see a floating style or even a kiss style that way you still get that tailored look without the complete formality of the puddle style. Living Room – In my opinion, this area depends on your style. A puddle or floating style curtain can lend itself casual or formal. But as one of my favorite quotes say :“Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is out of style” Billy Baldwin ~ Interior Designer

The Pre-Made Panel lengths that I suggest buying are 95″, 108″ or 120″. Longer is always better. Use the curtain guide to find your perfect length!

HOW TO HANG THE ROD AND CURTAINS

Tools and supplies you’ll need

Step 1. Take all your window measurements Step 2. Using a drill or screwdriver, hang the first bracket with screws. Use anchors if your curtains are heavy. Step 3. Add the rod and position the second bracket – before you screw it in make sure you use your level to ensure everything is even. Step 4. Add curtains to the center part of the rod. Step 5. Tight everything and You did it!
