How to Bring Scandinavian Style into Your Home

When simplicity and modernism meet in a space, Scandinavian style comes into being. A home featuring simple and functional design, filled with elements of nature such as natural light, wood, and hemp, is referred to as a Scandinavian-style home. Using a blend of contrasts and textures, a Scandinavian design makes sure to make minimalism look cozy and welcoming.

If your love for a clutter-free, minimalist look wants you to incorporate Scandi style into your home, but you’re not sure how to do this, here we have shared 7 hacks to come up with a stunning hygge space of your own. Let’s read the post to learn more:

Logam approach: “Just the right amount.”

The Scandinavian design emphasizes on the use of bright open spaces with enough room to move and breathe. Clean lines and white spaces evoke a sense of calm in these spaces; one thing that a Scandinavian-style space is not? Cluttered.

Usually, the first step in the creation of such spaces is decluttering. But it’s not that you only have the option of having a stark and ultra-minimalist look. You can aim for “Lagom,” a Swedish term that means “just the right amount.” We want our Scandinavian interior design to have not too much and not too little, and embracing lagom will certainly ensure that.

If you need some interesting tips for lagom, use color and pattern sparingly; try to create a balanced space with not “too much” of anything. Then, to hone in on your personal definition of lagom, remove or add pieces until you’re fully satisfied. And always remember to shop with mindfulness for your home decor; only then you’ll be able to have a perfect Scandi style lagom space.

Neutral color palette

The color palette associated with the Scandinavian interior design includes whites, blacks, grays, and browns. All these colors are almost always interwoven in a way that they create a clean and calming look. For added accents, designers have also introduced pop colors like rich sea greens and dusty pink in a Scandinavian color palette. In such spaces, walls are typically kept white to put focus on furniture and art pieces.

Atmospheric lighting

Lighting plays a significant role in Scandinavian interior design. One of the main things that a Scandi style home focuses on is how to use natural light more efficiently to make space appear bigger and brighter.

However, the importance of having artificial lighting to properly illuminate a room is just as important. True Scandinavian style décor contains a range of light sources to achieve the right amount of atmosphere.

One way to do this is by having a single statement piece like a huge fabric lamp or a beautiful rose gold ceiling fixture to act as a primary light source. Use a dimmer bulb for these lights so you can create an environment that suits your mood.

Along with having the main light source strategically place candles, smaller lamps, and other lighting fixtures throughout the space. This way, you can brighten or dim certain areas of your room according to the mood and need. It also allows you to use more intimate lighting in place of the bright overhead options.

Try to experiment with different forms of lighting, such as baseboard lights, wall-mounted fixtures, and salt lamps. Regardless of the option you choose for your Scandinavian interior design, don’t forget the principles of functionality, balance, and simple elegance.

Focus on flooring

You’ll rarely see carpets fitted in a Scandinavian-style home; these spaces often favor wooden flooring. Pale-colored woods like birch or pine help to reflect light in a rather dark Nordic region. Painting your floorboards white is also an option to create an illusion of spaciousness. Having a wooden floor in your space helps draw attention to the interior quality of your home’s furnishing and architecture.

Rugs are a must-have element in a Scandinavian interior design, both on a bare floor or under a coffee table. They help add a pop of color and texture to your room. Cotton and sheepskin are the go-to materials, with the design and colors of your choice.

Combine wood and metal finishes

A Scandinavian interior design uses wood not only in the flooring but also in the fixtures and furnishing. Thus, you’ll see pieces like a wooden coffee table and chairs in a Scandi style home. However, just as everything keeps evolving, the recent trend in Scandinavian style décor integrates wooden elements and metallic finishes. For example, brass pendants and copper scones are used in a wooden ceiling to add glimmer to the entire space.

Include functional furniture

A Scandinavian style decor mainly focuses on improving our daily life. Therefore, furniture is not only about form but also about functionality. Every selected piece in your home should serve a purpose while being durable.

Tie the room together by selecting a few furniture pieces for each room that pairs well with the accessories. For instance, for a living room, a comfortable couch and chair, a wall mirror or artwork, a stylish floor lamp, a few large indoor plants, accent cushions, and a woven rug work well. Remember to only add pieces that you truly love in your Scandinavian interior design.

Add simple, cozy accents

Add a Scandinavian flair to your home by carefully incorporating elements like chunky-knit throw blankets, plush carpets, a few candles, and houseplants. Think about creating an ambiance where you’ll want to sit with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate under the covers with an interesting book to read. In Nordic countries, a specific term used to describe a state of coziness and comfort is “Hygge.” Hygge equates wellness and contentment, and this is exactly what you’re trying to achieve in your home.
